I'm a terrible instigator, but...

Why wait 30 years?

The girl who wrote Aveyond was able to quit her day job to concentrate on making games. She gets to make adventure games and RPGs (and the occasional casual-game) for a living now. And she wasn't a programmer either - she was a tech writer with just a little bit of programming background.

I envy her. And I respect her like crazy. And she's sold way more games using an off-the-shelf toolkit than anybody would have expected.

Do it!

The awesome thing about Planescape: Torment is that you could talk your way out of fights. In fact, a lot of the time, using your negotiation skills and choosing the more subtle path would net you much more experience than just opening with a fist to the other person's face.
