Year in Review, 2008 Edition
Wednesday, December 31st, 2008Here on the last day of the year, I once again find myself amazed at how fast the time goes by. As far as my gaming life is concerned, it would seem this year is ending very much like the previous, as I contemplate cancelling my MMO subscription. It was around this time last year that my interest in EverQuest II, after three years of playing, was waning and I ultimately cancelled my account by February. This year, it’s World of Warcraft that I’m losing my interest in, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I cancelled my account within a month or so. While I actually quite enjoy WoW, I think I’m just getting a little tired of MMOs in general and need a change. That’s a post for another day though.
As far as the blog goes, I’ve continued to plod along at a somewhat steady pace. It’s no secret this is just a little hobby for me and the stats reflect that; rest assured that I have no delusions of grandeur. That said, I have every intention of keeping up with the site and posting stuff whenever I feel I’ve got something to say.
My top post this year was my April Fool’s prank, EverQuest II and Vanguard to Merge! My traffic will still spike periodically when that post gets linked in a forum somewhere by some poor soul who falls for it. A close second is my Heeding the Siren’s Call post because the picture I posted of the Kurken is returned as one of the first image results in Google.
As for the games I’ve played this year (not necessarily released this year), here’s a few bests, worsts, and other miscellaneous awards:
Game I Played the Most:
This easily goes to WoW, which I started playing in March and have played more or less exclusively up until the past few weeks. I’m currently halfway through level 74, but as I just mentioned, my time in WoW is coming to an end, perhaps after I work through the Dragonblight quests.
Favourite Game of the Year:
This is a tie between Rock Band 2 and Company of Heroes. There’s not a whole lot that I find more fun than having our friends over for Rock Band nights and jamming into the wee hours . On its own, it’s okay, but Rock Band needs four players to unleash its potential. Company of Heroes on the other hand, is great in both multi and single player modes. It’s the first real time strategy game that I’ve truly enjoyed in years.
Best Game I Actually Finished:
Halo 3. To many it’s overrated, but I love the Halo series. There’s nothing innovative about it, or really all that special, but I like it. I don’t finish a lot of my games any more, but once I got going on this one, I couldn’t stop.
Most Disappointing Game:
Bioshock. I was utterly captivated for the first level or two. I grew bored pretty quick though when every level after was the exact same. I forced myself to finish it just so I could see the ending, which, it turns out, I had predicted fairly early on.
Most Over-hyped Game Not Named Bioshock:
Portal. I played it. I finished it. I thought it was okay. I don’t get why people love it so much.
Most Likely to Succeed:
Left 4 Dead. I’ve only played it a little bit at this point, but I will definitely be playing more. What I’ve seen so far is fantastic and just plain fun.
Most Looking Forward To:
Street Fighter IV. Even though I suck at them, I love fighting games, and I consider Street Fighter 2 as one of my most favourite games of all time.
Best Moment in an Online Game:
Seeing my normally reserved, and calm friend go ape-shit when he died because I was too busy chatting instead of healing him.
Best Online Service for a Console:
Xbox Live. By Far, and it’s not even remotely close. PSN blows.
Actually, I just put that in there to bug someone, please disregard.
Biggest Hope:
That an MMO will be announced that makes me say, “that sounds awesome”. I thought it would be The Old Republic, but it wasn’t. I doubt it will be what 38 Studios is working on either, but feel free to prove me wrong.
So that’s my year in gaming. Tonight we’ll be celebrating in style, welcoming the New Year in with Rock Band 2. It should be awesome. I wish you all the best for 2009 and hope you have a fun and safe night tonight!
